This dataset includes microscopy images from paraffin embedding hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) as well as immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining’s for cleaved caspase-3, CD3 and CD11b. For these experiments, 6-8 week-old male and females mice from WT, Mavs+/- and Mavs-/- background were infected with 1E5 PFU of CHIKV, or mock-infected with (heat inactivated inoculum or PBS). Cardiac tissue was extracted at the indicated timepoints, fixed in formalin for 72 h, paraffin embedded and sectioned at different levels to obtained four chamber view representation, as well as representation of the vessels attached to the base of the heart.

The dataset is divided into sections. Each folder contains (i) description; (ii) a readme.xlsx file with all experimental details, and (iii) comments. Each file contains a Key-Value Pairs tab that contains all relevant information about each sample. The sections include:

• Section #1: Cleaved caspase 3 staining for WT-infected and mock-infected mice (intravenous), related to figure 2. Description: Mock-control (n=3), 3 dpi (n=3), and 5 dpi (n=3).
• Section #2-1: Cleaved caspase 3 staining for Ifnar1-/- and for WT-infected mice (intravenous) at 1 dpi, related to figure 3. Description: Mock-control (n=2), Ifnar1-/- (n=3), and WT (n=3).
