Impact of the Food Environment on Child Body Mass Index

UID: 10171
Author(s): Brian Elbel
Description

This data was compiled as part of a project to analyze existing administrated data to investigate the impact of the food environment on body mass index BMI. The project aimed to characterize the relationship between population characteristics and the urban food environment, determine the impact of variation in the urban food environment on BMI, and identify interaction effects between demographic characteristics and food resources.

Data on the location of all food sources in New York City was collected from the New York City's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene restaurant grading program from January 2008 to May 2016 and from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets establishment records from January 2007 to December 2015. These agencies inspect food retail every year. Data elements include restaurant or vendor location, geocoding, and opening and closing dates.
