Description
In order to study the effects of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in cases of refractory Tourette syndrome (TS), researchers performed a retrospective chart review of patients who underwent surgery between January 2009 and May 2016. Thirteen consecutive patients with at least 6 months of follow-up are included in this dataset. Patients were assessed using the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS), and the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (YBOCS), and a formal neuropsychological evaluation. Patients also responded to a survey, administered at least 6 months after the procedure. The survey used the Clinical Global Impression scale, which quantifies patient progress over time. Patients included in the chart review were required to have tried a course of cognitive behavioral therapy, 1 alpha adrenergic agonist, and at least 3 dopamine receipt-blocking medications prior to undergoing thalamic DBS.
