Down syndrome (DS) is linked with mitochondrial dysfunction, which results in accumulation of damaged mitochondria. This study revealed that mitophagy, a form of selective autophagy activated to clear damaged mitochondria, is deficient in primary human fibroblasts derived from individuals with DS.
