Mapping Hospital Data to Characterize Residents’ Educational Experiences
- Description
To examine the content of clinical exposure in the NYU Internal Medicine Residency program, investigators reviewed discharge data from inpatient resident teams at four teaching hospitals over the course of one academic year (July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021). 221 residents were assigned to inpatient rotations at NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn, NYU Langone Hospitals – Manhattan, Bellevue Hospital, and VA NY Harbor Healthcare – Manhattan. The inpatient resident teams participated in 18,064 discharges across all four hospitals.
The investigators developed a crosswalk tool to map principal ICD-10 discharge diagnosis codes to American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) content categories. This crosswalk tool captured over 95% of all inpatient resident team discharges at every hospital during the 2020 to 2021 academic year.
