Availability and Utilization of Automated External Defibrillators in New York State Schools
- Description
This dataset was collected as part of a project to assess the availability and utilization of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in schools in New York State, one of a minority of states which require them in public schools. Between January to March 2018, active nurses who were members of the NYS Association of School Nurses were invited to complete an electronic survey in REDCap to provide information on characteristics of the schools in which they practiced (e.g., type of school, size of the student body, level of education, locality), the occurrence of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), SCA survival (short-term and long-term), and AED use and availability. The survey also asked respondents to report their years of professional experience as a school nurse.
There were 876 respondents (36.1% response rate), of whom 71 (8.2%) reported SCA events. Anonymous survey data may be requested from the investigators.
