Effects of serial phlebotomy on vascular endothelial function
- Description
This dataset was generated through a prospective randomized, double-blind study to determine the effects of serial phlebotomy on vascular endothelial function in the brachial artery. Subjects of the study were 84 iron-replete, non-anemia men and post-menopausal women age 40-70 years. Subjects were randomly assigned to three study treatment groups:
- Four serial phlebotomy procedures each followed by intravenous infusion of placebo normal saline
- Four serial phlebotomy procedures each followed by intravenous infusion to replete lost iron
- Four serial sham phlebotomy procedures each followed by intravenous infusion of placebo normal saline.
Phlebotomy procedures were conducted at 56-day intervals, and brachial artery reactivity (BAR) testing was done before and after oral methionine administration with high-resolution duplex ultrasound imaging before and one week after the fourth study phlebotomy. Blood sampling for biochemical markers was performed by blinded research staff before phlebotomy at visit 2 and one week after the fourth phlebotomy procedure at visit 7.
