Timed instrumental activities of daily living in multiple sclerosis: The test of everyday cognitive ability (TECA)
- Description
This dataset was compiled as part of the development of the Test of Everyday Cognitive Ability (TECA), a test of ten Timed Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (TIADLS) meant to measure a broad ranger or functioning. TECA’s performance was tested on 177 patients with MS and compared to healthy controls (49 subjects).
Participants were recruited from the outpatient practices at Stony Brook Medicine’s MS Comprehensive Care Center, and healthy controls were recruited from the State University of New York Stony Brook campus and the surrounding community. Eligibility for all participants included: 18 to 70 years of age, English language fluency, no primary neurological (other than MS) or psychiatric disorders, no alcohol or substance abuse, not currently taking CNS stimulate, no major head injury resulting in the loss of consciousness, no uncontrolled health conditions for which ongoing treatment is required, and a scaled reading score between 85 and 115 on the reading recognition subtest of the Wide Range Achievement Test - 3rd Edition (WRAT-3) as a proxy of premorbid general intellectual functioning.
TECA measured participants on the following ten tasks:
- Finding a telephone number
- Making change
- Reading a label
- Finding an item on a shelf
- Reading a medicine bottle aloud
- Buying grocery items
- Finding a telephone number and differentiating between people with the same names
- Finding a telephone number of a specific business
- Reviewing a shopping list
- Recalling the information listed on a medicine bottle
Each task was scored according to the completion time, and any errors made. At the time of TECA administration, participants also completed additional measures, including the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT), the Delis Kaplan Executive Functioning System (DKEFS), the Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-Revised (BVMT-R), and the Brief International Cognitive Assessment for Multiple Sclerosis (BICAMS).
