NYC Youth Risk Behavior Survey
Alternate Titles(s): YRBS
- Description
The NYC Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) is a subset of the national YRBS conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This survey monitors priority health risk behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of mortality, morbidity, and social problems among youth in New York City. Students complete a self-administered, anonymous questionnaire that measures a variety of behaviors, including tobacco, alcohol and drug use, unintentional injury and violence, sexual behaviors, dietary behaviors, and physical activity. The results are intended to be representative of public high school students in grades 9 through 12.
Data from the NYC YRBS from 1997 through 2001 is available on the citywide level. Borough-level data is available from 2003 onwards. Since 2005, data is also available for three Neighborhood Health Action Center areas: South Bronx, North and Central Brooklyn, and East and Central Harlem. Beginning in 2018, the NYC has also administered the YRBS to public middle school students in grades 6 through 8 to collect citywide prevalence data.
